Harrison Yeager started his marketing internship at Bazaarvoice in January 2009. After a semester full of hard work, great experiences, and free snacks, Harrison joined the team as a full-time hire in the marketing department. He sat down with us to answer a few questions about Bazaarvoice, his internship, and the unbeatable culture at Austin’s Best Place to Work.

How did you hear about Bazaarvoice? What made you want to work here?

I first heard about Bazaarvoice through friends working here. As senior year rolled around, and I began investigating career options, I decided to learn more. I quickly realized how much I interacted with Bazaarvoice technology, and knew the company was onto something big. I recognized that Bazaarvoice was defining their space. This kind of market leadership and entrepreneurial spirit wasn’t something I saw at other companies I’d considered before. When my friends started to tell me about the great culture here, and then began to recruit me as a marketing intern, I couldn’t say no.

How did you apply for your position? What did you do to get hired?

Two friends and Bazaarvoice employees reached out to me about an internship. I submitted my resume to the marketing team and came in for an on-site interview. I was hired as a marketing intern, with one condition from my pending boss at Bazaarvoice. She would only hire me if I found a replacement for my old job, where I was working for her husband. Luckily, I found a replacement, and I was able to transition into my new role as marketing intern. I learned a lot during the internship. With a lot of hard work, collaborative input, dedication, and adding my own personality to the culture, the team decided they could use me as a full-time employee. At graduation, I was converted to Marketing Operations Associate, where I currently am a part of an awesome team.

How was your Bazaarvoice internship different from other jobs you’ve had in the past?

My internship was radically different from other jobs, mostly due to the amount of responsibility entrusted to me. As an intern at Bazaarvoice, people don’t seem to treat you any differently than they would a full-time employee. You’re given long-term projects with deadlines, integral business tasks, and the opportunity to find ways to improve the business overall. People value the “outsider” input an intern can bring. Today, as a full-time employee, I have seen this full circle while working with the new marketing interns. Sometimes I think an internship at Bazaarvoice can be more challenging and impactful than many full-time jobs.

What was the most important thing you learned in your internship?

The most important thing I learned as an intern was to stay focused on the objective, and always look for ways to improve. You should be able to justify the work you are doing by understanding the objective and the potential impact. As an intern, I always made sure I knew the end goal behind all the work I did, and how it would affect the business. Looking at process from different perspectives is a must, and this will help you identify ways to improve operations, as well as improve your own workflow and discipline.

What advice would you give others who’d like to intern here?

Bazaarvoice has an expectation that you will be good at what you can do here. If you really want to be a part of the team, you need to not only prove how good you may be at the given job, but how much you understand what Bazaarvoice is about. We look for people who believe in our culture, our potential, our market leadership, and the core of our business – the customer voice. If you can demonstrate this in the hiring process, then you are the type of person we are looking for.

Heather Brunner Native speakers are super geil

Moderating global content requires native speakers. Online translation software and non-native moderators lack the skills to interpret nuances and slang that arise in global online communities every day. Reading content in any language is subjective, but when a non-native speaker attempts to moderate content in a language other than their mother tongue, misunderstandings can lead to disastrous – and in some cases, hilarious – consequences for your online community.

The German word “geil” pops up quite often in our reviews. Online translators define geil as “lecherous”; in modern German speech, however, this word means something very different. Rather than describing a recently purchased clock-radio as “lustful”, German reviewers use geil to describe something as “cool” or “popular.”

Major failures can ensue when overlooking the importance of cultural context, as relying on non-native speakers often results in cultural misinterpretations. When one beer brewer offered their slogan “Turn It Loose,” the phrase translated into Spanish as “Get Diarrhea.” And one American fast-food chain found out the hard way that “finger-lickin’ good” gets lost in translation. The chain launched an entire campaign in China with the phrase without consulting native Chinese speakers – buckets of chicken everywhere urged customers to “eat your fingers.”

Whether its colloquialisms or common phrases, in the realm of content moderation, technology cannot surpass the human eye. To ensure the highest level of quality, hiring only native-speakers of the submitted languages will suffice. Bazaarvoice currently handles content volume from over 20 different languages internally, with a staff comprised completely of native speakers.

We hired the first member of non-English content moderation team, a native Dutch speaker, two years ago. Today, our Dutch team is over a dozen members strong, and so are our other high volume language teams – French, German, Spanish, and Italian. The Content Moderation team at Bazaarvoice – and the company as a whole – is truly international, and eager to understand other cultures to accommodate every language with the sensitivity and respect it deserves.

Bazaarvoice is currently hiring in the following languages to join our moderation team: German, Dutch, French, Italian, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Icelandic, Turkish, Finnish, Polish, Russian, Korean, and Belarussian. Native speakers are encouraged to apply!

Heather Brunner Bazaarvoice Moderation Team “Gold Club” reads more reviews than anyone else in the world

It has been quite a month for Bazaarvoice! We were named Austin’s Best Place to Work, and our CEO Brett Hurt was just named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in Austin. In addition to these very prestigious awards, Bazaarvoice awarded our top moderators by inducting them into the Bronze, Silver, or Gold Club. Together, our moderators have read and moderated over 50 million reviews, with our three Gold Club team members moderating over 100 million characters each! To put it in perspective, that’s the equivalent of moderating War and Peace more than 32 times!

This is a world-class achievement — these moderators have read and moderated more reviews than anyone else in the world!

Bazaarvoice has always been proud to tout its unique culture, and this pride has spread to the Moderation Team as well. When Bazaarvoice does a service project, the moderators are quick to lend a hand. For our Teddy Bear drive last Christmas, the moderators brought in more teddies than any other Bazaarvoice team! And just as Bazaarvoice wears green to cheer on our Sales Team at the end of a quarter, so do the moderators.  We meet regularly for happy hours and team events, and some moderators even meet in small groups to visit client stores they are curious about.

Sam Decker Bazaarvoice Awarded Best Place to Work in Austin (Second Time)!

As chief marketing officer you might think I'm most interested in excellent whitepapers, PR, events and such. Well…ok, I am.
