Bazaarvoice CEO Brett Hurt won the Austin Under 40 2009 award in the Technology and Services category on Friday!

Although Brett was out of town with his family for the awards ceremony, he was there in spirit – and in cardboard cutout – thanks to Bazaarvoice Marketing Manager, Amber Quist, shown here with Austin Mayor Will Wynn.

    I have been meaning to post the speech that Amber gave on my behalf. First, thank you to Amber and Linda for attending and representing me. Second, here is the speech. Hopefully it inspires others to give back to the community:

    “When I set up our ‘babymoon’ before my wife gives birth to our second child, I did not realize it was on this important date. This is why I should work with my incredible assistant, Linda, on booking everything!”

    “As an Austin native and longtime entrepreneur, I could not be more proud to accept this award. I strongly believe that all of us have an obligation to ‘nourish the soul’ of our companies. At Bazaarvoice, we have been very successful, growing to 360 clients and 400 employees globally in just 4 short years. As a result of that success, our obligation to nourish our soul with community service, right here in Austin, is more important than ever. Our success obligates us to spend even more time helping the less fortunate.

    “Five months after founding, we established the Bazaarvoice Foundation with a major gift to the Entrepreneurs Foundation, and have worked with many local charities since, including the Make a Wish Foundation, Emancipet, the Center for Child Protection, Habitat for Humanity, and the Salvation Army. On a national level, we recently donated our Stories product to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, established in honor of the legendary coach Jimmy Valvano, and the user-generated stories about surviving cancer that are being posted are incredibly touching and impactful to their donations. I cannot think of a better reward for our success at Bazaarvoice than seeing the Bazaarvoice Foundation have a greater impact, and also seeing our products and services make a real difference to national non-profits. When you build a company to win, everyone can win if you let them.”

    “As an entrepreneur, I am proud to serve on four Board of Advisors and three Board of Directors, doing my part personally to help other entrepreneurs model this focus on community service while also creating jobs.
