Love that you raised this for discussion -- while I can really feel their pain, at least they're TRYING to embrace the user community, and I'm sure they're learning a ton in the process. While this first effort likely isn't going to be a huge success for them, they'll be that much more able to execute more effectively with trials 2 and 3, since they'll have this hands-on experience.

Not to mentioned the amount of press coverage they've received (like this blog article) -- that, in itself, is likely worth 5-10x the cost of the campaign -- entrants 2 thru 100 will likely get the same (or worse) results with none of the follow-on coverage.

So, kudos to Heinz...

Now, I'm hungry... burger? hotdog?

Great article, Brett -- I also forwarded the Heinz article to a few friends who have been thinking about the UGC space and how it relates to their businesses. I applaud them for getting into the fray and learning rather than opining on a space that is growing under their feet.

Keep up the writing -- loving it!
